If I understand the current automatic of the Hammer card correct, you can choose between automatic forging or collecting. If you choose to collect and your stock is full, additional gold is lost.
My suggestion: Automate collectiong gold as long as you have space, then use it to advance in the hammer card.
Especially in the early phase of the game collecting gold is more suitable than spending it to the hammer. Or is this already the way it functions? I'm scary to test it... -
