I find any chatting during a timed game to be a distraction, and potentially unsporting, and I would like to be able to turn it off. (Instead I shift the bottom of my window off screen to hide it, but that is a poor work-around.) What annoys me the most so far is occasionally players whining about speed of play, invariably when nothing is particularly slow compared to the clock (and life and the internet sometimes just cause short delays). Being forced to see such whining during a game rather than concentrate on the game itself is a detriment for those who don't want the feature.

I would also like the option to disable chat. I stopped playing hanabi because of being instructed every turn what I should do. But that's not the main reason. In most games we don't chat but someone leaves "good game" at the end of every game. If I played longer games that wouldn't matter but since I tend to play 5 minute to 10 minute games many times a week, I have to go through and clear like 10 different messages every few days to get it off of the bottom of my screen. I like the option to chat when I feel like it and just have it turned off when I don't want to.

Like to chat. Like to say gg at the end. Appreciate when people say it back. Also, want to play with humans instead of bots. But all that said, it would be nice to know if people don't want to chat. And sometimes, I too, would like to just play in silence. For me, it seems like the option to turn it off is the next step in communications -- as long as there is a clear marker symbol that shows the person's intent. --Kind of just like real life :)

I made a browser extension to hide the chat on BGA. It's free for Chrome and Firefox, $1 on Safari. Works pretty well if you don't want to hear from people

I also would like to hide chat or even be able to block anyone who isn't from my friend list to send me a message. I guess this also could be a good parental control for children... Anyone who sends me a message there is just "GG", I don't care at all, It just annoys me

I would also love to be able to hide chat. I get tired of high experience players who berate you for mistakes and give repeated unsolicited advice. Maybe have an option to only let through the pre-written texts like "Hey are you still there?" etc.?

An option to turn the chat off and on would be great. Everyone has their own preferences: for me personally, I have no issue with 'gg' or 'Good luck' or 'oops misclicked' or a nice friendly 'Thanks for playing', but I get really anxious and distracted when people are having a whole conversation during the game or asking me all kinds of personal questions. While we're in the middle of the game, I'd like to focus on the game, and a toggle to temporarily hide the chat would help me do this without having to bother other players by asking them to stop.

Switching off of the chat will be great. I hate it, if people write "gg" (good game) after winning a game, because for me, it was not a good game.

Chat window has keyboard focus by default, which means that in a multitasking environment it's perilously easy to enter gibberish (or protected information, depending on working environment). And there's no way to delete chat entries! I see people type garbage, screenlock passwords, etc into chat all the time.
If it's not optional, it's a bug not a feature...

I agree that this would be a great option. I would return to playing more regularly on BGA if I had the option to turn off chat--with a polite signifier that this is my status.

2 options for new tables would be great:

- no chat at all

- chat only before first move and after end of the game

I'd like to be able to disable chat for non-friends, but I'd still consider completely disabling it to be an improvement. In arena play I find it's frequently used for unsportsmanlike comments.

I am also in favour of being able to turn off the chat, but for a different reason. I only play with friends, and we don't use the chat. The chat button/bar takes up space and prevents me from seeing information. For example, in Great Western Trail, in the default setup, when I open the floating player cards, the chat button/bar prevents me from seeing the bottom of some of the cards, which makes it hard to see their colour.

I'm also in favor of this. In certain games, the chat makes the whole experience very toxic.

I'm anxious about playing online precisely because people have no qualms about insulting or making fun of you if you make a mistake or lose. The ability to silence the chat would be excellent for those who, like me, suffer from these things, because meaningless flame is toxic.

I only play with friends using Discord to talk. It'd be great (when playing with friends) to disable the chat windows altogether.

or at least just mute some person for the certain game.

in Bang it is a common problem that somebody start criticize another player for not reaching their own standard, and they just don't leave them alone.
sometimes even 1 hour after the game ended I still get the messages from this player (or sometimes from both of them).

it makes your game experience very bad, and it takes away your mood, hard to concentrate on the gameplay - and you can't even disregard, as every message pops up...

I would expect a mute button to have been built in from the start. Why are we forced to read through chat berating us for not being skilled enough? This enables toxic behavior.

Some people want to chat throughout the game. As someone with a disability, I can not focus on both things. That's why it would be a great help to me and possibly other players with a disability to have the chat muted/turned off in game.

Agreed, I dislike having to click on the notifications after nearly every game just to see somebody said "gg".

For Catan, this usually turns into a distraction. People complaining why the robber was moved where and why they steal from someone. I think if I create a table I should have the option to decide if I want to chat in it or not. If people want to chat, they can join a table that has this feature enabled :)

If you choose to realize this one day, please make sure everyone can see that player X has unabled their chat, in order not to confuse anybody and trigger further conflicts.

People are harassing others in chats and I don’t mean saying “play faster” or criticizing moves. I mean using derogatory words and using obscene language. It is very disturbing. Please add the option to disable chat. Thank you

In favor. And I would not tell other players that you have stopped listening to them, unless it's a game like CATAN where you depend on being able to offer trades to others.

it should be illegal not to have a mute button you guys are aholes honestly not inclding it poeple have been asking forever. its not like theres anotehr competing platform like this.
